Franklin Square Deli has been a fixture in Downtown Kent since 1983. What started as one man’s vision—a sandwich shop built with a racing enthusiast’s attention to detail and a commitment to doing simple things well—has grown into a Kent tradition, now serving its third generation of customers.
The Deli Tradition
For more than four decades, the recipes haven't changed much and customers walk through the same door their grandparents did. Here's how we got here:
Opening
Carl Picelle opened Franklin Square Deli in 1983. His attention to detail and commitment to quality helped turn a small sandwich shop into a Kent institution. From hearty subs, traditional deli sandwiches, and homemade soups to daily specials and friendly conversation, Carl built a place customers came to rely on.
A Familiar Face Behind the Counter
In 2026, Carl passed Franklin Square Deli to Jamie Reamer, a former employee who first worked at The Deli while attending Kent State. Jamie would eventually meet his wife, Mallory, while both working behind the counter. Jamie & Mallory married in 2013, and today their family is proud to be owners of the business that brought them together.
Carrying It Forward
Jamie returned to Franklin Square Deli with a simple goal: to honor what has made The Deli special for 40+ years while carrying it into its next chapter. The sandwiches, soups, and welcoming atmosphere people love are here to stay — along with the sense of community that has always defined the shop.
